Semrush AI Toolkit vs Ahrefs Brand Radar (2026): which SEO suite tracks AI search better?

Two SEO suites, two AI add-ons, both built on modeled prompts. Pricing math, engine coverage, accuracy caveats, and the layers neither one measures.

Quick verdict

For a single domain, Semrush AI Toolkit is the cheaper and more practical tracker: $99/mo covers five engines and 25 prompts, mapped to keywords you already track. Ahrefs Brand Radar is the better research database, with a far larger modeled prompt corpus and a one-click pivot into backlink data, but it costs more and refreshes slowly. Neither one is a measurement platform. If AI search is becoming a real channel for you, put Promptwatch on the shortlist before you commit to either add-on.

Where Semrush wins

The keyword-to-prompt mapping is the best thing in the Toolkit. You see which money keywords now resolve to AI answers you are missing from, in the same interface you already use for rankings and backlinks, and nobody needs training. For one flagship domain and one user, $99/mo for five engines is fair in this category.

The trouble starts when you scale it. Every extra domain is another $99, every seat another $99, every 50 prompts another $60. Our listing puts two users on one domain with 75 prompts at about $258/mo, and a ten-domain agency around $1,000/mo, for what is still an add-on.

Methodology is the other soft spot. The tracked "user questions" are generated by AI, not observed, and one reviewer called the output probabilistic guesswork after a pre-seed startup was assigned implausible prompt volumes. Recommendations can be generic ("improve onboarding"). Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush in April 2026, which anyone signing a long contract should keep an eye on.

Where Ahrefs wins

Brand Radar's argument is scale. A corpus in the hundreds of millions answers category questions a 25-prompt sample cannot touch, like whether your AI presence is growing across a market and who dominates citations in it. Then comes the pivot: any cited page beating you is one click from its backlink profile and content gaps in regular Ahrefs. No standalone GEO tool on our list follows that thread as directly.

The accuracy record is why it sits one place below Semrush. An independent January 2026 test found Brand Radar reported 3 ChatGPT mentions where manual checks verified 123, an undercount of roughly 97%. Chatbot indexes refresh about monthly, so week-to-week movement stays invisible. A full configuration (base plan, all-six bundle, sometimes custom prompts) lands between $828 and $1,148+/mo on our listing.

Pricing in practice

Price the setup you would actually run, not the headline.

ScenarioSemrush AI ToolkitAhrefs Brand Radar
One domain, starter coverage$99/mo add-on on your Semrush plan (5 engines, 25 prompts)$129/mo base + $199/mo for one index
Every engine the vendor offersEnterprise AIO, sales-gated$129/mo base + $699/mo bundle

Semrush is cheaper at the bottom and gets expensive sideways, through domains and seats. Ahrefs is expensive from the start and gets expensive upward, through indexes.

Who should pick which

Choose Semrush AI Toolkit if

You already live in Semrush, have one domain that matters, and want an AI column next to your keyword data. Keep the seat and prompt count small or the add-ons outgrow the base price.

Choose Ahrefs Brand Radar if

You are an Ahrefs team doing quarterly competitive research and care more about category share and the backlink pivot than exact counts. One index at $199/mo is the sensible way in. Read every absolute number as a floor.

Choose neither if

You manage several brands or clients, need Claude coverage without a sales call, or need to see week to week what changed in AI answers.

What both are missing

Both add-ons answer one question: does the brand show up in modeled AI answers? Neither listing documents what a team needs once the answer is "not often enough". There are no published AI crawler logs, so you cannot see whether ChatGPTBot or PerplexityBot fetched the page you want cited, or whether the request errored out. There is no published visitor analytics tying AI referrals to conversions, which is the first thing finance asks for once AI search becomes a budget line.

That gap is why many teams evaluating these two end up trialing Promptwatch alongside them. It monitors the real AI interfaces rather than inferring prompts from Google keywords, and attaches search volumes, difficulty, and query fan-outs to each prompt. Citation analytics go to page and domain level, including Reddit and YouTube. Agent Analytics, from the Professional plan ($245/mo, 25M crawler logs), shows the crawl-to-citation path. Visitor analytics starts on Essential at $95/mo. Every paid plan covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, so the Claude gap in both suites goes away.

Agencies have a second reason to look. Promptwatch's self-serve agency plans start at $199/mo (Kick-off) with unlimited projects and prompts and 10 seats, which beats Semrush's per-domain math and sidesteps Ahrefs' missing client structure.

You do not have to drop your SEO suite to do this. Keep Semrush or Ahrefs for keywords and links and run AI visibility in a tool built for it. The full ranking has the rest of the field.

FAQ

Do both tools use real user prompts?

No. Semrush tracks AI-generated approximations of user questions, and Ahrefs models its prompts from Google keyword and People Also Ask data. Use both for direction rather than exact counts.

Which covers Claude?

Neither on standard pricing. Semrush reserves Claude for Enterprise AIO, and Brand Radar has no Claude index.

Is Brand Radar still free inside Ahrefs?

No. The free beta ended; you need a base plan from $129/mo plus $199/mo per index or $699/mo for all six.
