Semrush AI Toolkit review 2026: is the AI visibility add-on enough?
Semrush's AI Toolkit puts five AI engines next to your keyword data for $99/mo per domain. Where that is enough, where the add-on math breaks, and what it does not measure.
Quick verdict
The Semrush AI Toolkit is enough in one configuration: a team already paying for Semrush, tracking one flagship domain with one user, that wants AI visibility next to its rankings. In that setup $99/mo is reasonable and the keyword mapping is useful. Add domains, seats, or prompts and the cost climbs fast, while the methodology (AI-generated prompts, not observed ones) stays the same. It also stops at "were we mentioned", with nothing published on crawlers or conversions. We rank it #4.
What it does
The Toolkit tracks brand mentions and links inside AI answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity. It compares your share against competitors and puts SEO and GEO data in one report.
The feature that justifies it is keyword-to-prompt mapping. Semrush maps its prompt set onto the keyword universe you already track, so you can see which commercial keywords now resolve to AI answers that leave you out. For a team that plans content from keyword data, that turns AI visibility into a prioritization list rather than a separate dashboard.
Semrush claims a prompt corpus in the hundreds of millions. The prompts themselves are AI-generated approximations of what users might ask, which matters for how you read the numbers (more on that below). Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush in April 2026.
Pricing
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| AI Toolkit | $99/mo per domain | 5 engines, 25 prompts, 1 user |
| Extra domain | +$99/mo each | Same coverage per additional domain |
| Extra user | +$99/mo per seat | Team expansion |
| Extra prompts | +$60/mo per 50 | Volume expansion |
| Enterprise AIO | Sales-gated | Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek coverage |
It is sold as an add-on, and Semrush One bundles run $199 to $549/mo. Nobody should buy Semrush just to get it.
Here is how the add-ons stack, using figures from our listing. One domain, one user, 25 prompts is $99. One domain, two users, 75 prompts is about $258. Three domains with two users is about $396 and up. A ten-domain agency lands around $1,000/mo. That is before the base Semrush plan.
Strengths
Onboarding is effectively zero for a Semrush shop. Same login, same interface, same keyword data, and the reporting infrastructure is mature.
AI data sitting next to rankings and backlinks is handy. When a page loses its AI Overview mention you can check its rankings and links without exporting anything.
Five engines for $99 on one domain is competitive at the entry point, and it includes AI Mode and Gemini, which some suite add-ons skip.
Limitations
The cost structure punishes growth. Per-domain, per-seat, and per-prompt pricing turns a $99 add-on into a four-figure line for agencies and multi-brand teams. Semrush's broader billing reputation, with long-standing Trustpilot complaints about refunds and cancellation friction, does not help.
The prompts are modeled. Because tracked questions are generated rather than observed, critics describe the visibility numbers as probabilistic guesswork. One reviewer showed a pre-seed startup being assigned wildly implausible prompt volumes. Read trends as signal and treat absolute numbers with suspicion.
Recommendations can be generic to the point of parody ("improve onboarding", "lower your prices"). Reports also run thin for small brands with a sparse AI presence.
Coverage stops at five engines unless you go through sales. Claude, Copilot, and DeepSeek are Enterprise AIO.
And the listing documents nothing beyond mention tracking: no AI crawler logs, no visitor analytics tying AI referrals to conversions, no prompt difficulty or fan-outs, and no content pipeline that publishes to a CMS.
How it compares

| Entry price | $99/mo per domain (add-on) | Free Explore; $95/mo Essential | $129/mo base + $199/mo per index | $295/mo ($245 annual) |
| Engines at entry | 5 | All monitored models on paid plans | 1 per index; 6 in the $699 bundle | 9 |
| Claude | Enterprise AIO only | Every paid plan | Not covered | Yes |
| Prompt source | AI-generated approximations | Monitored in real AI interfaces, with volumes and fan-outs | Modeled from Google keywords | Not published |
| AI crawler logs | Not published | Agent Analytics, from Professional | Not published | Not published |
| Conversions | Not published | Visitor analytics | Not published | GA4, Shopify, Webflow revenue attribution |
| Multi-brand pricing | +$99/mo per domain | Agency plans from $199/mo, unlimited projects | No per-client structure | Unlimited seats; single country on Starter |
Ahrefs Brand Radar is the suite rival. It has a deeper index and the backlink pivot, but costs more and refreshes monthly. AthenaHQ is the action-oriented option, with an Action Center that turns gaps into tasks.
Promptwatch is where we would send anyone for whom the Toolkit is not enough. Its Essential plan costs $4 less than the Toolkit and covers every monitored model, Claude included, with 50 prompts and 6,000 responses. Prompts come with search volumes, difficulty, and query fan-outs, which answers the "are these even real questions" problem more directly than modeled prompts do. Visitor analytics on Essential shows whether AI-referred visits convert. From Professional ($245/mo), Agent Analytics shows which AI crawlers fetch your pages and where they fail. Agencies get unlimited projects from $199/mo on Kick-off instead of paying $99 per domain.
Verdict
Is the add-on enough? For a single-domain Semrush customer who wants a directional AI column next to keyword data, yes, and the keyword mapping alone is worth trying. For multi-brand teams, agencies, anyone who needs Claude, or anyone who needs to explain why a page is or is not cited, no. At that point the add-on costs as much as a dedicated platform without doing what one does.
